Dean of the College of Pharmacy

THE POSITION

The University of Kentucky invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Pharmacy, with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2010.

The Dean must have the desire, ability and vision to lead a premier college of pharmacy within the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s flagship public university and must be prepared to initiate both new strategies and employ established approaches to respond to current opportunities and challenges with the goal of bringing the College to a new level of achievement in a rapidly changing environment of national health care delivery systems. The Dean is expected to provide strong intellectual academic leadership, to promote a commitment to excellence among the faculty, staff and students in education, research, service and patient care, including graduate and professional programs. The Dean is responsible for the overall supervision, direction and administrative leadership for educational, research and engagement activities of the College, as well as the management of human resources, budgetary and fiscal resources, active fund raising and alumni programs. The Dean is expected to lead the continued development of outstanding relations with other practitioners and administrators in the College, UK HealthCare, University, the Commonwealth and the profession. As the College’s chief executive and chief academic officer, the Dean reports to the Provost.

Qualifications for this position include an in depth understanding and intimate knowledge of both research and practice aspects of academic pharmacy, extensive and sustained record of scholarly achievement, personnel and budgetary experience, experience acquiring extramural research funding, excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, strength in team building and a collaborative orientation toward University, community and state activities which enhance the health of the citizens of Kentucky. An earned doctorate in an appropriate field of study, a record of accomplishments in Pharmacy education and research, and a national and international reputation at a level commensurate with earning tenure at the rank of Professor in the College of Pharmacy are required.

 

THE UK COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy is among the top 5 pharmacy schools in the nation and is an international leader in education, patient care, clinical and pharmaceutical research. The College offers a four-year professional Pharm.D. program which currently enrolls more than 520 future pharmacists from 90 of Kentucky’s 120 counties. Graduates from the program have the highest first-time pass rate in the nation on the national pharmacy licensing exam. The College also offers a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences with three tracks including the new graduate degree in Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy that enrolled its first students this year. Overall, more than 65 students from Kentucky and across the globe are enrolled in the prestigious graduate program that educates future scientists for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, government and academia.

The College of Pharmacy has two academic departments including the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Faculty at the College are engaged in pharmaceutical science research with therapeutic targets such as drug abuse, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Research is supported through funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other key funding agencies and is often conducted in collaboration with researchers from other UK disciplines as well as with researchers from other universities and the pharmaceutical industry.

In December 2009, the College’s faculty, staff and students will move to the new University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy building located at 789 South Limestone. The new facility will be the first academic building completed as part of the University of Kentucky’s academic medical campus of the future, a 20-year, $2.5 billion expansion project on the south side of campus accelerating research and health education in Kentucky. At 286,000 square-feet, the $134 million facility will be the largest academic building in Kentucky and among the largest in the nation.

The building will include a five-story atrium, two 235-seat auditoriums, a 110-seat classroom, a 54-seat classroom, a teaching laboratory with compounding laboratory and patient assessment rooms, and 19 small group/study rooms, all equipped with the latest in wireless technology. In addition, research facilities have been created to foster collaboration among researchers in chemistry, biology and pharmaceutical laboratory areas.

THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

The College of Pharmacy is one of six colleges in the Medical Center, which includes Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Public Health. The Medical Center shares the Lexington campus with one of the most comprehensive arrays of colleges at any research intensive university. Pharmacy faculty have taken advantage of this disciplinary diversity to build creative collaborations with faculty in the Colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and others. University-wide a major emphasis on health care is perceived as essential to a 21st Century land grant institution. The University of Kentucky aspires to and has been mandated by the Kentucky General Assembly to become one of the nation’s Top 20 Public Research Universities by 2020. Substantial fiscal resources have been allocated to support growth of research and endowments for chairs, professorships, graduate fellowships, research programs and research facilities.
