Student, Faculty Excellence Recognized at Scholarship and Awards DinnerApr 24, 2013
Students and faculty were honored for excellence in the classroom and in the community at the UK College of Pharmacy’s second annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner April 12, 2013 at The Signature Club at Lansdowne.
The event brings together student and faculty scholarship and award recipients as well as the College’s generous donors that support the College’s scholarship and award programs.
“This was an evening dedicated to honoring the best and brightest students from the nation’s 5th-ranked College of Pharmacy,” said Tim Tracy, Dean of the UK College of Pharmacy. “The College applauds our scholarship and award recipients for their work both inside and outside the classroom to positively impact the pharmacy profession.”
Scholarship and award recipients, their families, and faculty also had the opportunity to listen to remarks from keynote speaker Clay Rhodes. Rhodes, a UK College of Pharmacy alumnus, serves as Strategic Consultant for Business Development within Humana Pharmacy Solutions. Rhodes also owns an independent pharmacy in Prospect, Kentucky with his wife, Jill Rhodes, who also is a UK College of Pharmacy alum.

The Bluegrass Award is given to a first professional year student who has been selected by classmates for leadership, activity and character. The award is sponsored by the Bluegrass Pharmacists Association.

The Arthur C. Glasser Scholarship Award is given to a first-year student for their academic achievement in the areas of medicinal chemistry and biochemistry.

The Paracelsus Award is given for overall academic achievement by a first professional year student.

The Bootstrap Award is presented to a second year student who has demonstrated the greatest overall academic improvement between their first and third semesters in the College.

This H.O. Haeusgen Award is named for a former Professor of Materia Medica (pharmacology) at the College for many years. Given for overall academic achievement by a second year student, and is sponsored by Lambda Kappa Sigma.

Kappa Psi Honor Certificates are awarded to brothers of Kappa Psi for academic achievement in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th professional year.

The Kappa Psi Graduate Chapter Award is given to a second year student who has been selected by classmates for scholarship, activity, character and contribution to the profession. The award is sponsored by the Graduate Chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.

The Scholas Award – Scholas is a Greek term meaning scholar – is given for outstanding overall academic achievement based on the first professional year’s grades and activities as determined by a Rho Chi Committee. The award is sponsored by the UK Chapter of the Rho Chi Society.

The Excellence in Pharmacology Award is given to a second year student for outstanding academic excellence in the areas of Physiology and Pharmacology. The award is sponsored by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Andrews Lambda Kappa Sigma Travel Award provides a travel stipend to a member of the UK College of Pharmacy Collegiate Chapter of LKS, for the purpose of funding all or partial travel to the annual LKS regional or national conference.

This Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Recognition Award is presented to a student who has exhibited an interest in and exhibited excellence in the use of natural medicines.

The Doughty-Hartman Award is presented to a student who in past performance has demonstrated creative use of media in informing the public of the role of the pharmacist or the profession of pharmacy, or who has worked to improve the inter-relationship of allied health professions through the use of the media. The award is sponsored by Gloria Doughty.

The Lesshafft Professionalism Award is given to a third year student who has demonstrated excellence in integrated course activities and growth in professional development throughout the 6-semester lab sequence. The award is sponsored by the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science.

This Albert Turk Award is named for a former manager of the Lexington Division of McKesson Drug Company. The award goes to a third year student who has been selected by classmates for outstanding scholastic achievement and professional activities.

This Gordon L. Curry Award for Excellence in Chemistry is named for the former dean of the College when it was located in Louisville. The Curry Award is given for outstanding academic achievement in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry. The award is sponsored by the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Joseph V. Swintosky Excellence in Pharmaceutics Award is given for outstanding academic achievement by a student in courses taught by the faculty in the area of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Analysis, and sponsored by the faculty in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

This Melody and Stephen J. Ryan Travel Award is given to support all or partial travel and living expenses while a student is on rotation at an approved advanced community pharmacy practice educational site.

The Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Award is given to a student for their commitment to the profession of Pharmacy and outstanding leadership in various facets of the both the College and non-College community. The award is sponsored by the UK Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma.

The Rho Chi Service Award is given to a student for participation in professional organizations and College projects, as well as service endeavors. The award is sponsored by the UK Chapter of the Rho Chi Society.
Recipient: Zachary Noel
The David Christopher Flynn Memorial Award was established in 2005 by Julie and Jeremy Flynn in memory of their infant son. The award is presented to a PY3 student who successfully completes a pre-residency pathway and who shows the greatest interest in clinical pharmacy practice.
Recipient: Zachary Thompson
The Kentucky Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists Award is given to a student who has demonstrated an interest in institutional pharmacy practice, high performance in internship and experiential courses, and leadership potential in professional organizational activities. The award is sponsored by the Kentucky Society of Health- System Pharmacists.

This Earl P. Slone Award is named for the Dean of the College from 1946-1967. For an outstanding student chosen by the student body of the College on the basis of academic, professional and social accomplishments. All four current PharmD classes vote for this award winner each year.
