Biotransformation - Bismuth (Bi)

• Bi alkylation does not occur in mammalian tissues (Clarkson, 1979).
  
  

• Bi induces the synthesis of a Bi-metal-binding protein, chromochelatin, a metallothionein, affecting its binding to proteins in the kidney (Szymanska et al., 1977; Szymanska and Zelazowski, 1979; Szymanska and Piotrowski, 1980; Zidenberg-Cherr et al., 1989).
  
  

• Intracellular inclusion bodies, metal-protein complexes, have been seen following Bi exposure, most frequently in the nuclei of cells in the proximal renal tubule. Chelation therapy can cause expulsion of nuclear inclusion bodies (Goyer, 1995).
