Bi alkylation does not occur
in mammalian tissues (Clarkson, 1979).
Bi induces the synthesis of
a Bi-metal-binding protein, chromochelatin, a metallothionein, affecting
its binding to proteins in the kidney (Szymanska et al., 1977;
Szymanska and Zelazowski, 1979;
Szymanska and Piotrowski, 1980;
Zidenberg-Cherr et al., 1989).

most frequently in the nuclei of cells in the proximal renal tubule.
