Water-soluble Bi species were excreted more rapidly than Bi species
suspended or dissolved in oil. For example, 82.2% of an aqueous solution of
bismuth thioglycollate was excreted in four days compared to 1.9% of an oil
suspension of bismuth oleate
(Kolmer et al.,
1939).
Approximately 90% of absorbed Bi is excreted in the urine within 24 hours.
The rate is proportional to the solubility of the Bi species.
The
contribution of the urinary and fecal route to Bi elimination has not been
well determined. It may be Bi species dependent
(Slikkerveer and de
Wolff, 1996).
