Background
Graduates of the pharmacy residency and advanced training programs of the University of Kentucky often seek careers in academia or have strong interests in academic positions, and thus require sufficient preparation for their instructional roles. Additionally, faculty members may not have been fully prepared for instruction in professional program settings. At the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, multiple teaching opportunities exist for residents and graduate students to cultivate these skills, including lecture experiences, laboratory instruction and assistance, small group facilitation, elective rotations, faculty development seminars, and clinical rotation teaching.
The certificate program is designed to introduce participants to academic literature, contemporary pharmacy/health professions education, teaching styles, and philosophies. The primary philosophy of the program is built upon the Carnegie Foundation’s work on teaching as scholarship. Through engagement in seminars, documentation of formal teaching experiences, and development of a teaching portfolio, participants can document their participation and experience while earning a certificate of completion. Participants will receive handouts, bibliographies, and web site information to encourage future learning and development. Originally developed as an on-campus course, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Certificate (STLC) program has been expanded via videoconference technology to sites across Kentucky. The program was recognized as a 2004 winner of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Teaching Innovations Award.1,2

Audience
Healthcare professions faculty, residents, and graduate students are invited to participate. Those who do not wish to receive a certificate of completion are also welcome to participate in any component of the program.
Goal
The goal of this program is to provide a forum for program participants to gain knowledge of contemporary health professions and pharmacy education issues and to demonstrate experience and accomplishment in these areas.
Requirements
In order to earn a certificate of completion, participants must meet the following requirements:
- Seminars
Attend and participate in each of the seminars. Participants must account for any session that is missed by preparing a written summary of the reading assignments and digital presentations, as well as their applications to the participant; submit these reflective statements to Belinda Morgan within one week following the missed seminar. Off-campus participants will follow this format throughout the 2009-10 seminar season. - Learner Participation
Participants will be active learners. Throughout the program, they will prepare for and participate in discussions, debates and other learning activities. Many of these activities will be supported through readings and other course materials available via Blackboard®, the course management system used for the STLC. Questions about the Blackboard® system should be directed to Jeff Cain. - Continuing Education
Participants will complete the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Preceptor Orientation Training Program. This free, online continuing education program is found at http://www.cecentral.com/activity/397 . Submit certificate of program completion to Belinda Morgan by October 2, 2009. - Teaching Experience
Participants will employ techniques learned during the seminars through instructional delivery.The nature of instruction provided can be customized to each participant’s setting (e.g., on or off-campus) and profession (e.g., pharmacy, medicine). The minimum teaching requirements for all participants are 2 contact hours of didactic (e.g., classroom) and 8 hours small group or practice-based teaching (e.g., formal inservices). Each participant will submit a plan for instructional delivery (e.g., composition of audience, venue, date, topic) to Belinda Morgan by September 30, 2009.
For on-campus pharmacy participants, a structure has been developed as follows:
Format Contact HoursFormat (UK Campus) Didactic 2 hours2 x 50-minute classroom lectures Small group / practice teaching 8 hours1 professional practice laboratory session (2 hours x 4 sections), PHR 9x9 sequence Residency program directors or other supervisors may have established additional teaching requirements; thus, each participant should discuss instructional expectations with his/her supervisor.
Each didactic teaching experience must incorporate at least one classroom assessment technique (CAT). Use of the CAT will be reflected upon in the structured evaluation, and corresponding materials should be included in the participant’s teaching portfolio.
Each teaching experience must be evaluated by the course teaching instructor or facilitator, the STLC participant (selfassessment), and the students/audience. A structured evaluation form for each segment must be completed. A learner evaluation process is in place for pharmacy participants engaged in didactic instruction and laboratory facilitation for pharmacy students. Contact Belinda Morgan prior to the scheduled instruction to request a student evaluation of such teaching.
Pharmacy participants who are engaged in the conduct of experiential education (e.g., student rotations) should seek to have their teaching experiences evaluated by the student(s). Contact Helen Garces (Curriculum Development Officer – Experiential Education; hiklar00@email.uky.edu) prior to the scheduled rotation to request a student evaluation of such instruction.
- Teaching Philosophy
Each participant must develop a written teaching philosophy. The statement must be submitted to Belinda Morgan by November 20, 2009. - Teaching Portfolio
At the conclusion of the program, each participant will submit a teaching portfolio to the participant’s residency program director (or to Kelly Smith for non-residents) to verify completion of all elements. The deadline for portfolio submission is May 14, 2010. Required portfolio elements include:- Statement of teaching philosophy;
- Summary of teaching activities (e.g., course title and number, number of students, contact hours, teaching topic);
- Examples of teaching work (e.g., handouts, learning objectives, examination questions, CATs);
- Evaluations of teaching experiences (e.g., students, supervisors, participant self-assessment).
- Evaluations
Participants will actively engage in a number of programmatic assessments. These include:- Baseline participant evaluation;
- Year-end participant evaluation and program review;
- Weekly seminar evaluations.
Certificate
Each participant who completes all program requirements will be awarded a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the year.
Seminar Schedule
Seminars will be conducted from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. Eastern time. On-campus presentations will be held in the Health Sciences Learning Center Room 501B.
